A painter and mystic, Hilma Af Klint is now considered a pioneer of the abstract movement, her work predating even Kandinsky’s early abstract paintings. She was part of ‘The Five’, a group of women who believed in summoning the higher powers through seances. I like where this is going….
Her work definitely has a spiritual resonance. It was her lifelong determination to explore the realm beyond the seen, beyond the senses. She wanted to describe in her art how the macrocosm relates to the microcosm, and how we live in a multi-dimensional reality. Bear in mind this was in the early 1900’s, and being a woman she knew the male dominated art world (and world in general), would not be welcoming of her work and ideas so at her request she wanted none of it shown until 20 years after her death.
